Ace Broadcaster and Director General, Imo State Broadcasting Corporation, Ms. Ify Onyegbule, has sued Nairametrics for N100 million for unlawful misrepresentation of facts and defamation of her character.
GATMASH NEWS recalls that the Nigeria Police Force recently published a “Special Police Gazette Bulletin” declaring “Wanted” one Mrs. Victoria Yemisi Imasi, whose image and description were tagged or published in the said bulletin.
Pursuant to the above facts, Nairametrics in a post authored by Zainab Iwayemi in November 26, 2022, and shared on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and website via “www.nairametrics.com” published similar facts of that of the Nigeria Police Force but fraudulently and unlawfully impersonated Ms. Onyebule by slamming her photograph intentionally on the publication to replace that of Mrs. Victoria Yemisi Imasi published by the police in its bulletin as a wanted person.
In a petition by her solicitors, Liborous Oshoma Chambers, said Nairametrics posts has “assassinated, bastardized the character and reputation of Ify Onyegbule,” who has carved a niche for herself in the media industry through relentless hard work and dedication for over 23 years across 16 different Radio and TV stations in Nigeria.
Part of the petition read: “As a result of this misrepresentation, other social media platforms subsequently followed in that pattern copying verbatim the post made by Nairametrics and Zainab Iwayemi”.
Ify Onyebule who recently was appointed as the new Director-General of the Imo Broadcasting Corporation, has filed a petition before the Police against Nairametrics, demanding an apology for unlawful misrepresentation of facts and defamation of character.
In addition, Ms. Onyegbule is also demanding for a retraction of the publication by Nairametrics on all its social media platforms. Similarly, Nairametrics is to tender an unreserved apology in the same media platforms and pay the sum of N100 million as “reputational and psycological damages” within the next 48 hours.
Ify’s lawyer, Liborous Oshoma, warned Nairametrics that failure to accede to the directives to retract the story, render necessary apology and compensate her for all the infractions desirable within 48 hours, a legal action would be taken against them on the receipt of the petition.
