Crashed marriages have become regular occurrences in the entertainment industry. Although there are several celebrities who have been able to hold their homes together, the number of divorces in the industry seem to be on the increase. Saturday Beats takes a look at some celebs whose marriages crashed this year
Basketmouth
Many were quite shocked when popular comedian and actor, Bright Okpocha, aka Basketmouth, announced in an Instagram post on Thursday, December 22, 2022, that his 12-year marriage to his wife, Elsie, had packed up.
He wrote, “As much as it pains me to bring my personal life to the public space, this is an unavoidable situation. After much deliberation, my wife and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage.
“As we move forward separately, we will continue to work together to give our beautiful children all the care, love, guidance and support they need. We humbly ask that you respect our privacy as we navigate through these times. Thank you.”
Oritsefemi
Nabila Fash, the wife of singer, Oritsefemi Majemite, revealed that their marriage has crashed during an Instagram Live session with media personality, Ifedayo Olarinde, aka Daddy Freeze, in October, 2022.
She accused him of infidelity and physical abuse. She said, “There were times he got physical with me, but the most I faced was verbal and emotional abuse. I also had to deal with constant cheating and at some point, I was told I had to deal with it because of the industry he works in.
“However, at some point, I became numb to the cheating and saw it as normal. But, for him to have a child without telling me made me feel betrayed. I filed for divorce three months ago but he isn’t accepting. He feels it is one of those times when we would sweep it under the carpet and later take pictures forming ‘couple goals’. His excuse for cheating was that he was looking for a son; and I’m happy he finally got one.”
The couple got married in 2017.
Do2dtun
A popular on-air personality, Kayode Oladotun, aka Do2dtun, and his estranged wife, Omotayo, have been involved in a messy divorce case.
Omotayo had instituted divorce proceedings in November 2021 over claims of emotional abuse, domestic violence and forced abortion against her husband.
According to Omotayo’s lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Do2dtun forcefully entered Omotayo’s residence in Abuja (after she left their matrimonial home) on December 14, 2022, with some policemen and assaulted her gateman and staff. She later petitioned the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, over unlawful entry, malicious damage, criminal trespass and unlawful use of policemen by Do2dtun.
However, on December 15, 2022, the OAP took to Instagram to allege that his wife’s family and lawyers were spreading lies against him.
funke Akindele
Popular actress, filmmaker, and the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Funke Akindele, got married to singer and filmmaker, Abdulrasheed Bello, aka JJC Skillz, in May 2016. Over the years, many had admired their marriage, particularly because they seemed to handle working together well.
However, in June 2022, Skillz announced their separation on Instagram. He wrote, “Dear friends and family, I need to let you know that Funke and I have separated. While it lasted, we shared a lot of things together and have created two beautiful children.
“The last two years have been extremely difficult for us. I know I have tried my best to fix things but I believe it is beyond repair now. Months ago and at Funke’s insistence, I moved out of the house and apart from the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, I have not been able to get her to sit down in an amicable manner to discuss the future of our relationship.”
Yewande Adekoya
In April 2022, an actress and filmmaker, Yewande Adekoya, announced that she had left her marriage due to infidelity and financial irresponsibility on the part of her husband, Abiodun Thomas.
In an Instagram Live session with a popular blogger, Gistlover, Adekoya said, “For 14 years, I have been emotionally abused by him (Thomas). He talks to me anyhow; I used to cry almost every day. I was our financial backbone all through the years but I never complained. I just wanted him to grow up, act responsibly, and honour our marriage. (But), he just wants to keep enjoying life and leave the serious part for me to handle.
“He has different girls. At the beginning of our relationship, I was convinced he was faithful; then imagine my shock when I started seeing things that can drive an emotional woman mad. I am grateful to God, therapy and my family. He broke me to pieces. It hurts because I was 100 per cent loyal to him.”
Korra Obidi
Singer and dancer, Korra Obidi, separated from her American husband, Justin Dean, in March 2022, some days after they welcomed their second child.
At the time, Dean had written on Instagram, “I am tired of the narcissism, cheating and lack of accountability. I have been trying since 2018 to save our marriage, and if I don’t do exactly what she says, she (threatened to) divorces me.
“I’ve been a prisoner that has his family used against him if she doesn’t get exactly what she wants. Korra Obidi and I are getting a divorce. It’s over; I wouldn’t be treated this way (any) longer. I did my absolute best to make it work.”
