The family of a 33-year-old night guard, Ebuka Osegbo, has petitioned the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, and demanded justice for him.
Ebuka, according to the petition by the deceased’s family lawyer, Mr Ejike Efobi, was murdered on Sunday, December 18, 2022.
The petition was dated December 24, 2022, and titled, “Complaint on the murder of Ebuka Osegbo of Dianokwu village, Umuoji.”
According to the letter, Osegbo was shot at Okofia Umuoji, where he worked as a security guard.
The family said the incident was reported at the Ogidi Police Division but the attitude of the police delayed in arresting suspects in the murder case.
The petition read, “The murder of Osegbo was carried out following a meeting of some persons, including prominent members of the community, who conspired among themselves to commit the murder.
“After they concluded arrangement to eliminate the deceased, the persons took further steps to acquire firearms, with which they executed the crime they had conceived.”
The elder brother of the deceased, Nonso Osegbo, accused some of the village leaders of killing his brother because he blocked them from gaining access to the site.
He said, “The criminals on the fateful day stormed the building site where my late brother was and started demolishing the erected fence. When information reached Ebuka, he rushed to the scene on a bike and while he was asking them why they were demolishing the fence, some of them, who had laid in ambush, opened fire from the bush and killed him instantly.”
The President-General of Umuoji Improvement Union, Mr Silas Onyima, said it was a case of a land dispute.
Onyima, however, noted that the union was making efforts to resolve the matter.
The Divisional Police Officer at Ogidi, Ahmed Sani, who confirmed the incident, said he had transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.
