The NBC President, Israel Akanji, stated this at a media chat on Wednesday in Ibadan.
Akanji, who described the rumour making the rounds in the cities that the Christian association had adopted a particular candidate as false, added that it was only after the emergence of a credible leader that would reposition the economy of Nigeria after the elections.
He said, “People have been encouraged to vote according to their conscience for people who will be of great benefit to Nigerians, wherever they may come from. We believe that God, who has always helped Nigeria, will help us again.”
He therefore appealed to candidates contesting for various elective positions to display a good spirit of sportsmanship rather than seeing elections as a do-or-die affair.
The adoption of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, by the duo of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Edwin Clark, according to Akanji, was their decisions.
He said they have their own rights as Nigerians to make their preferred candidate known to the public, saying it was wrong for people to castigate them.
