The oil-producing communities in Delta State have advocated a review of the Petroleum Industry Act for the betterment of host communities.
The communities made the advocacy on Friday in Asaba, the state capital, during a workshop organised by CODE in collaboration with OXFAM for oil-producing areas.
In his presentation, the Umusam Community Development Committee Chairman, in the Ndokwa West Local Government Area of the state, Mr Basel Onyemeh, described the three per cent contained in the PIA as a minus.
He said, “We learnt a lot in this workshop, especially how to track projects. When I go back to my community, I have a project I want to track.
“On PIA, we the oil-producing communities are calling for a review of the Act, especially the 3% allocated to host communities.
“The oil-producing communities in Delta have been enjoying over three per cent; now they have drawn us back. The MoU we had with oil companies are over three per cent.”
