Abia State government says it has uncovered plans by known opposition elements in the state to use security agents to manipulate the outcome of the March 9 governorship and State Houses of Assembly election in the state through intimidation.
The State government, in a press release issued to newsmen, Wednesday evening, by the Commissioner of Information in the state, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, claimed that the opposition elements had procured the services of a senior security personnel in Abuja, to redeploy key service personnel in the state and bring in officers from outside Abia who will execute the arrests of key supporters of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on trumped up allegations.
While calling on those involved in the plot to desist from it, the government said it had alerted all PDP leaders in the state to be extra vigilant and ensure they resist any attempt to frame and lure them into the net of the rogue individuals and their accomplices.
According to the statement, “From the events of the past weeks, it is obvious that the opponents of Governor Ikpeazu are aware that they stand no chance against him in a free and fair electoral contest and hence, have resorted to extra-legal means to sustain their dead-on-arrival ambitions.
“Abia voters are hereby enjoined to go out on Saturday to exercise their constitutional right of choosing their leaders without fear of molestation. We will do everything possible to ensure that their votes count and are counted as well as guarantee a peaceful election in the state”.
