The Chief Medical Director, UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, on Tuesday said the patients were registered and screened, noting that the surgery comes with a 50 per cent subsidy as a way of giving back to the society.
He added that assessing medical care globally does not come cheap, particularly for persons who are not covered in the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Obaseki said the hospital remains committed to providing quality medical services for Nigerians seeking quality healthcare solutions.
He said, “In this month of February, UBTH is providing 50 per cent subsidy on some high end minimal invasive procedures such as endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeries, colonoscopy, Optical Coherence Tomography among others.
“We hope that this will go a long way in helping patients who seek medical care and also show that as a medical institution, we care for the society in which we operate in,” he added.
Some of the patients commended UBTH noting that the development was uncommon and expressed joy to be part of the beneficiaries of the subsidised surgeries.
A patient who spoke on behalf of other beneficiaries simply identified as Lucky, said he was one of the patients that benefitted in the subsidised surgery, after having lost hope in accessing healthcare services at other hospitals owing to the huge cost involved in getting medical care.
“I must say that I am fortunate to have benefited from the subsidised surgery. I have sought medical care from various hospitals before this opportunity came. I must commend the hospital for this gesture,” he said.
