Some hours after the House of Assembly election, the Ondo State Police Command said it had arrested many suspected criminals in connection with various crisis that occurred in some areas during the election.
It was reported that violence broke out in some parts of the state during the poll as some suspected political thugs hijacked and destroyed ballot boxes and other voting materials in Ute Community, Ose Local Government Area of the state.
Two persons, including a police officer, were hit by stray bullets in Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area.
The police, in a statement on Sunday by their spokesperson in Ondo State, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, said the suspects were arrested by the security agents in different parts of the state during the exercise.
She, however, did not disclose the number of arrested suspects.
The spokesperson said, “The Ondo State Police Command has arrested suspects involved in various offences on election day. The suspects were arrested in different parts of the state with some currently with the military.
“They were arrested in connection with cases of unlawful possession of firearms, snatching of ballot boxes, attempted murder and serious assault. All cases relating to electoral offences will be harmonised and would be dealt with in accordance with the Electoral Act after completion of investigation.
“The command appreciates the collaboration of sister agencies and that of the law-abiding citizens in the state for the maintenance of law and order throughout the election period.”
She added that the command was committed to serving the people of the state with a high sense of responsibility, professionalism and universal policing best practices.
