OctaFX’s CSR Ambassador, Tunde Onakoya, recently appeared on the Channels TV Business Morning show to discuss the company’s approach to CSR. As a national Master of Chess and the convener of NGO Chess In Slums Africa (CISA), Onakoya shared how his organisation has helped 30 communities across Nigeria, primarily focusing on educating children in impoverished communities. CISA employs the game of chess as a framework for giving underprivileged kids access to education. Thus, through sustainable initiatives, companies can improve the lives of people who would otherwise have limited access to education and opportunities.
OctaFXalso sponsored the Chess in Slums Africa (CISA) project in Ibadan, Nigeria, which provided education, including chess, basic tech knowledge, and basic education, to 40 vulnerable children living under the Mokola under-bridge. Through the program, a young orphaned teen named Ade discovered his intellectual potential and won the chess tournament that followed an intensive 3-week chess training, highlighting the impact of highlighting a child’s abilities. Previously, OctaFX has organised a financial literacy program in Makoko, the largest floating slum in the world, empowering 50 children by setting up investment accounts and prioritising community empowerment over handouts.
In addition to OctaFX’s existing CSR efforts, the company recently aided victims of the Nigeria floods in December 2022. The efforts focused primarily on the Bayelsa region, where OctaFX provided aid to local farmers by supplying them with farming materials such as Yam and Cassava. The company also helped 42 small businesses in Bayelsa with financial support to revive or restart their operations, while in Anambra, they renovated the Anam school.
OctaFX’s future plans are to continue to target more kids falling through the cracks of society and show them that there are people who care for them enough to pull them back up. At the same time, CISA has set a goal to reach 10,000 children in 2023.
