The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday arraigned a man, Peter Okon, before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba for allegedly stealing money and valuables belonging to his roommate at the Abule Oja, Yaba area of the state.
The 34-year-old was arraigned before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka on two counts of breach of peace and stealing.
Okon was said to have stolen two pairs of jeans valued at N10, 000; a bag valued at N10,000; and N60,000, belonging to his roommate, Saviour Edet
According to the prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, the defendant committed the crime on April 19, 2023, around 8pm at No 16, Amusa Street, Abule Oja, in the Yaba area of the state.
Okon, who earlier pleaded guilty, later changed his plea when the charges were read to him in English Language.
According to the charges, the offences contravened and are punishable under Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.
The charges read in part, “That you, Peter Okon, on April 19, 2023, around 8pm, at No 16, Amusa Street, Abule Oja, Yaba, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by stealing from one Saviour Edet, who accommodated you, and thereby committed offences punishable under Section 168(d) the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”
The prosecutor prayed the court to remand the defendant at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre pending the issuance of legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
According to the Magistrate, Nwaka, the defendant was not being real to himself and so he granted the prosecutor’s request and ordered that he be remanded pending the DPP’s advice.
Nwaka also adjourned the case till June 26, 2023.
