Students of the Legacy Campus of the Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Edo State on Tuesday protested the death of a final year student of Computer Science, Bruno Ezeonye.
Ezeonye, 21, slumped while playing football on the school premises on Monday and died before help could reach him.
The students, who mobilised to protest on Tuesday, vandalised the school’s clinic and security post but eventually calmed down when the university’s President, Bishop Faith Idahosa, addressed them.
A student, who did not want his name in print for fear of victimisation, described the deceased as the only son and second child of his parents.
“The deceased collapsed on Monday while playing football at the campus pitch. He was a good footballer,” he said.
A parent, who also did not want his name in print said, help did not come on time when the deceased collapsed.
He added that when help finally came, getting an ambulance to rush him to a hospital outside the campus also became a challenge.
BIU’s Head, Communication and Brand Strategy, Temi Esonamunjor, in his reaction on Tuesday, simply said, “The university will make an official press statement on the true state of things.”
