According to British tabloid, ManUtd News, Manchester United are ready to invest heavily in a striker when the transfer window opens, adding that their primary target will be Tottenham Hotspurs’ forward Harry Kane while Victor Osimhen is the club’s second choice.
Erik ten Hag guided the Red Devils to a coveted Top 4 Premier League finish in his first season in charge and they are also in the final of the FA Cup, where they face city rivals Manchester City on Saturday, but there’s ample room for improvement.
The website pointed out that among the sides to have secured European football for next season, only Aston Villa (51) netted fewer goals than the Red Devils (58), highlighting the frontline as the team’s weakest link.
Last season, United relied on Marcus Rashford to shoulder the scoring burden, with the 25-year-old racking up 17 league goals and five assists.
Rashford’s tally accounted for 38 per cent of the Red Devils’ overall scoring output in the Premier League, while he was also the only Man United player to hit double digits in 2022/23.
With the Devils in dire need of a prolific striker, several names like Osimhen, Kane and Goncalo Ramos have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Osimhen was the star man for Napoli as they claimed their first league title in 33 years, and has been tipped to move to United in the summer.
However, ManUtd News wrote that such a move would only happen if the Devils failed in their bid to land Kane from Spurs.
“If talks for Kane’s switch to Manchester come a cropper, Ten Hag has a contingency plan in place, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen emerging as another potential candidate to fill the void,” the tabloid wrote.
“Despite several injury setbacks throughout the 2022/23 Serie A season, the 24-year-old won the Capocannoniere award for the highest scorer in Italy’s topflight with 25 goals.”
