The family of the late All Progressives Congress supporter and road transport worker, Gbenga Balogun, on Monday, sought justice for their breadwinner.
Balogun was allegedly killed by soldiers in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, on June 12, 2022.
A son of the deceased, Kayode Balogun, said all had not been well with the family since the father of eight was allegedly shot dead by a military man, who was among those drafted to Ekiti State in preparation for the June 18, 2022 governorship election.
Among inscriptions on the placards carried by the family members during a peaceful rally to commemorate one year of the killing was: “Dear Governor Oyebanji, the wife and children of the hero of democracy, Gbenga Balogun, killed on June 12, 2022, are looking forward to your kindness, sir. Long live APC, long live Ekiti State.”
Another read: “Our dear Governor Oyebanji, remember the democracy hero in Ekiti felled on June 12 last year. His family is looking up to you for help.”
Recalling how his father was killed, Kayode said, “He was going towards the venue of a peaceful protest organised to protest the attack on APC members on governorship campaign tour along Oye-Isan Road the previous day by opposition party members when a soldier fired a shot which hit him in the stomach and killed him.
“Since then, to say the family is suffering is an understatement. The upkeep and education of the children he left behind have been Herculean. We appeal to the governor, Biodun Oyebanji, to come to the aid of the family. We also want something done about his killer.”
Factional leader of Oodua People’s Congress in Ekiti State and an uncle to the deceased, Ogunyemi Aluko, said, “We plead with the Ekiti State Government to rise against injustice. We want justice in this matter.”
