The resolution was sequel to the adoption of a motion moved by Zakaria Nyampa, a member representing Michika/Madagali Federal Constituency of Adamawa State on “The need to investigate alleged abuse of peacekeeping operations and mismanagement of its proceeds and funds.”
The lawmaker argued in his motion that peacekeeping operations among countries are vital to the sustenance of peace and progress of fragile nations like Nigeria.
He, however, noted that “The proceeds of peacekeeping operations have never featured as a source of revenue in the national budget nor captured in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework,” usually presented to the parliament by the previous administration in the country.
He added, “The mismanagement of the proceeds of peacekeeping operations in Nigeria has reached a point where all the parties involved need to account for the spending.
“If this practice of non-inclusion of proceeds of peacekeeping operations in the budgets and MTEF and poor accountability of funds is not stopped, nation-building will be meaningless.”
The panel is expected to report back to the House in four weeks for further legislative action.
