A singer, Wiz Ofuasia, aka Wizboyy, known for hit songs such as Infinity and Screen Saver, is of the belief that the rise of afrobeats does not in any way jeopardise the existence of highlife music.
In an interview with Sunday Scoop, he said, “There has never been a better time to be Nigerian than now, as afrobeats has become our most significant musical export. I am honoured to be a part of this movement. Afrobeats and highlife are intertwined, and one cannot be separated from the other. Rather than viewing afrobeats as a threat to highlife, we should find the common elements in those sounds and make them recognisable. When someone creates highlife songs, people can still relate to them within the context of afrobeats.”
When asked about his recent musical endeavors, the singer said, “A lot of people think nothing has happened after the Infinity song. That is not true. I have been busy, although I slowed down a bit at some point. It was for me to know what I had done right and what I needed to address. I had to play catch up with my songs to promote them and for people to put a face to them. I believe I am still on that journey— putting a face to my music. Many people know my songs more than they know my face. I am also an audio engineer, and I produced most of my songs. I have worked with artistes such as Flavour, Ice Prince Ikechukwu, Monica Ogah, Chidinma, Ill Bliss and others.”
