Gunmen have shot and killed two youths who were on a surveillance duty at the site of a crude oil spill in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The spill had occurred from a pipeline belonging to a multinational company which reportedly destroyed farmlands and rivers in the area.
A source who gave her name as Celestina, stated, “These youths had been mandated by the community to keep watch over a recent oil spill site pending the completion of investigations into the cause of the spill and repairs on the affected pipeline.
“At about 2 am on Saturday, August 26, the youths were attacked by some gunmen leading to two deaths while others sustained gun shot injuries.”
Speaking, the Chairman of Gokana LGA, Confidence Deko, confirmed the incident, saying security operatives were contacted to forestall a possible break down of law and order.
Deko said, “Yes, we heard of it and we alerted the security agencies, including the Joint Taskforce to that community.
“They confirmed to us that indeed two persons were killed. And we have asked them to ensure that they fish out those responsible for this dastardly act. ”
While urging the people to remain calm, the LG disclosed that he has summoned a meeting of elites in the community to discuss and review the challenges there in.
When contacted, spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a terse message, saying, “Investigation is ongoing.”
