Ajagunna, who is also a Professor of Sustainable Development, said this on Saturdaay while officially declaring his intention to contest for the governorship position in the state.
He described the shift as an approach to better governance.
“It is therefore urgent that we respond conscientiously to the call for the need for paradigm shift; a new but better perspective and approach to governance,” he said.
The PUNCH reports that the incumbent governor whose tenure ends in a couple of months was elected for a two-term tenure. Akeredolu was initially elected into office in 2016 and he won the October 2020 state governorship election.
He added that the state had not yet achieved even half of the growth it deserved, despite the avalanche of resources and potentials available at its disposal.
“This is even as today the world is being rapidly reshaped by the accelerating pace of scientific and technological advances, demographic trends, the rise of new centres of global manufacturing, surging demand for resources, rapid shifts in the pattern of environmental impacts, changes like risk, political and economic influence, competition and conflict, and the geopolitical balance of power, and some potential global threats. Some of these changes have implications for Ondo state,” Ajagunna said.
The Ikare-Akoko-born intellect noted that he took an interest in taking up the political seat as he “can no longer ignore the call or sit in my comfort zone while my people are in dire need of a visionary leader to steer the wheel of our state’s affairs,”
“Today, I have decided to make the bold decision known to you all, to dedicate myself fully to the service of our men and women, young and old; as I draw inspiration from the biblical Nehemiah who left Babylon to lead his people to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem,” he added
Ajagunna, who is a member of various reputable international bodies disclosed that his declaration followed due and wide consultation with his family, associates, community, relevant personalities in the country and diaspora and even global leaders.
Amongst many plans, Ajagunna vowed to give intense focus to the Deep Sea Port Development, which Akeredolu had commendably started.
“As a Professor of Sustainable Development, I can assure you that the maximal exploration of our coastline will put us in a position next to Lagos in economic development in a few years to come and I am fully committed to this vision. Maritime and the Blue Economy is going to be a game changer for the state. Other sectors that will enjoy my attention include; Security, Education, Health Services, Agriculture, Infrastructure,” he said.
He, however, admitted the task ahead not be an easy one but expressed confidence that with various supports, it would be less difficult.
“I have international exposure, profound educational knowledge and vital experience as vital requisites to drive the highly expected changes in our sunshine state,” he said.
