Nigerian defender Jordan Torunarigha is determined to silence his critics and make a significant impact as he embarks on a new journey with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Having initially turned down the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Torunarigha has since made the decision to don the green and white jersey. He now seeks to establish himself as a key player for the three-time African champions.
The talented centre-back expressed his enthusiasm about joining the national team. He mentioned his appreciation for training alongside prominent Nigerian players like Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze. Torunarigha also highlighted the invaluable guidance provided by experienced players like William Troost-Ekong and Jamilu Collins, who have helped him adapt to the Super Eagles’ setup.
“It is nice to meet the players, and I think all of them are really nice people. It is also nice to train with big players like Osimhen and Chukwueze. Captain Troost-Ekong and Collins have really helped me to find my feet here,” he told NFF TV.
As he gears up for his first call-up to the senior national team, Torunarigha is eager to demonstrate his skills and prove wrong those who criticized him for initially choosing Germany over Nigeria. He acknowledges that he is a young player but is determined to make Nigerians proud with his contributions to the team.
“This is my first call-up and I hope I will be given time to show the fans who have been criticizing me for denying Nigeria what I am made of. I am a young guy and I want to show Nigerians what I can offer,” the 26-year-old said.
Torunarigha also shared insights into the differences he has observed between playing for Germany at youth level and being among Super Eagles. He noted that the Super Eagles’ environment is more relaxed and accommodating. This transition provides him with the opportunity to express himself more freely and comfortably within the Nigerian setup.
“Playing for both countries is really different because Germany is really strict… In Germany, you can’t go into meetings with flip-flops, you have to wear normal shoes. But here, you can go with flip flops, and everyone is looking fun. In Germany, everyone is organized and strict. But here, it’s a little easier,” Torunarigha said.
As he prepares for his potential debut in the 2024 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe on Sunday, Torunarigha aims to contribute positively to the team’s success and bring joy to Nigerian football fans.
