The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, has said the police officer who killed an engineer and father of three, Alafuro Peterside, will soon be arraigned in court.
Recall that Peterside was allegedly shot dead by an operative attached to the Police Mobile Force, 43 Squadron, in Gombe State on August 14 at a popular bar along Stadium Road in Port Harcourt.
However, CP Nwonyi, while responding to questions by our correspondent disclosed that the policeman whose identity was not disclosed has been dismissed and the matter charged to court.
He stated, “The suspect who happens to be a police officer has been dismissed and the case charged to court. That is the development. ”
Meanwhile, some residents of the state have called on the police commissioner to name and show the photo of the dismissed police officer who committed the said offence.
The residents spoke on Nigeria Info FM, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday and monitored by our correspondent.
They explained that ensuring transparency and accountability on such issues would help build trust between the Police Force and the communities they serve.
One of the residents who gave his name as Hon Ida, said, “They should please show the face of the dismissed policeman son that when we see him we will be convinced that he has been dismissed.
“Not that they will transfer him to another place to continue working as a policeman,” he added.
Similarly, a female resident, Mrs Uche Ken stated, “How can you withhold the name of a man who killed somebody? Are you trying to protect or defend the image of the police?
“We should know him so that when we see him standing on the road tomorrow we will recognise him.”
She called on the state police command to do more in curbing crime and criminality in the state.
