Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, congratulated Nigerians on their 63rd anniversary of independence and said the country would not benefit from a nationwide strike.
The speaker warned that pessimists and doomsayers would soon be let down while urging fellow citizens and compatriots to maintain hope in the nation.
Nigeria faces a variety of difficulties, but according to Abbas, the nation still has a chance and potential to reclaim its position as a global leader, especially given its wealth of natural and human resources.
He also urged organized labor, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, to abandon their plans to go on an indefinite nationwide strike on Tuesday over concerns about welfare.
“An indefinite nationwide strike would not benefit the nation at this time. In a statement released on Saturday by Musa Krishi, his special adviser on media and publicity, the Speaker claimed that doing so would only make the current situation worse.
“The organized labor should negotiate with the Federal Government and halt the strike by assisting the authorities so that all disputes could be settled amicably.
Recall that the speaker had on Tuesday advised against the strike, citing the effects on the already fragile economy.
He urged the union leaders to resume negotiations once more, stating that ongoing talks with the government would produce more fruitful and long-lasting outcomes.
He criticized the brain drain the nation was experiencing and asserted that only Nigerians could rebuild their nation and make its pastures greener.
“I exhort young Nigerians to be more patriotic by utilizing their skills and talents to advance their nation.
“The government stands a better chance of winning the confidence of not just the youth but all citizens of the country,” he said.
“With the introduction of revolutionary policies and programmes and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu“
Abbas expressed optimism that Nigeria and Nigerians have a bright future while urging support and prayers for all branches and levels of the government.
He declared that the 10th House was prepared to expedite the review and adoption of legislation that would promote the expansion and advancement of the nation.
