…..Police Yet to Respond
By Theresa Moses
In a recent turn of events that left many bewildered, an actress who donned a police uniform during a public event and struggled with the recitation of Nigeria’s National anthem, has left many questions unanswered.
The incident, which took place during Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Imo State, has raised more questions about the response of the police force to this apparent breach of decorum.
During the opening of the program in Owerri, the state capital, an actress dressed as a ‘female police officer’ led the recitation of the national anthem but found herself unable to recite the lyrics correctly, a moment captured in a viral video that has since swept through social media and news outlets.
This monumental disgrace, occurring in the presence of top officials, including Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, Ayo Ogunsan, left many attendees astonished.
The actress, rapper and singer in question, Mercy Isoyip aka Descushiel, has apologized for her actions. She claimed that her portrayal in a police uniform was part of a cordial relationship between the police and the citizens and not meant to insult the national anthem or the police force. Despite her apology, questions regarding the standards of training and preparedness within the police force, especially among senior operatives, persist.
As of tte time of filing this report, the police public relations officer department has not issued an official comment or response regarding the incident except IGP Egbetokun who said the girl was overwhelmed by stage fright.
This silence from the information department has left many concerned about the apparent lack of accountability for this breach of decorum, which occurred at an event attended by senior officers and government officials.
It is crucial to acknowledge that the incident has sparked widespread discussions and raised doubts about the ability of the police force to uphold the dignity of the national anthem and maintain professionalism at public events. The public’s expectation of higher standards in such settings remains a valid concern.
As this incident continues to draw public attention, many are eager to hear an official statement from the police regarding the incident and the subsequent actions they plan to take. The questions surrounding this situation highlight the importance of transparency, accountability, and maintaining the dignity of national symbols and ceremonies.
This case serves as a reminder of the significance of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and competence within law enforcement and other public service sectors.
The police should issue an apology to Nigerians as a symbol of accountability and acknowledgment of their role in ensuring the dignity and respect of national symbols and ceremonies.
Apologizing for the incident involving the actress in police uniform is an act of responsibility, demonstrating that the police force recognizes the importance of upholding national pride and decorum. Such an apology would help rebuild public trust, reaffirm commitment to professionalism, and underline the significance of maintaining high standards in public events, thereby assuring Nigerians that such incidents are not representative of the values and professionalism the police force stands for.
