The PUNCH reports that the ongoing cancer screening which began on Friday involved male and female personnel, senior officers, ranks and files, who turned out in their numbers for the exercise at the FCT Police Command Headquarters, Garki II, Abuja.
Speaking to newsmen at the police command on Sunday, the Brand Communications Officer, Bridge Credit, Barbara Alufa, revealed that the exercise was part of the corporate social responsibility of the financial institution to assist citizens, especially essential workers like police officers.
She said, “We are here today to have our CSR for 2023. Our CSR this year is focused on the health of our customers and essential workers. We are doing cervical cancer screening for the women and prostrate cancer screening for the men.
“We are looking at screening about 600 people, mostly our customers. We are doing it because we have a large customer base in the Nigeria Police, that’s why we are focusing on them.
“We are doing this at our Abuja branch today. I came from our head office to support and ensure that everything goes well. We did the CRS across all our eight branches nationwide.
‘We appreciate what the police are doing because they are a major part of the security system in Nigeria. We want to show that we appreciate what they are doing for the country, we support them and we care about their health and their well-being because directly or indirectly, their well-being will also affect the well-being of our people”, she said.
In her remarks, the Branch Manager of the financial institution, Abuja branch, Mary Kyocher, said the CSR project was occasioned by the scourge of cancer disease which has led to the death of many Nigerians hence the need to provide support for the health needs of the Nigeria Police.
“Cancer has become such a menace that you see somebody healthy today and tomorrow he will be no more and we live in a country where people don’t check their health or take their health seriously.
“We are here to create awareness and to emphasise the fact that it is important to check your health and know your health status”, Kyocher said.
Some police officers who took part in the screening exercise, expressed their appreciation to the company while noting that it was a good initiative to help improve the well-being of police officers.
