I wish I could teleport you to that amazing evening in the vibrant heart of Lagos! Picture it: the air thick with the excitement of celebration, the venue alive with the sparkle of recognition, a gathering of music stars and media veterans, amongst others.
48 hours before, I received an invitation from Ms. Ify Onyegbule, the distinguished Director-General of the Imo Broadcasting Corporation, to join her for a Prestigious Award of Excellence hosted by City People Magazine.
I was excited to see my boss and mentor, Madam Ify, as we caught up and got talking and taking pictures. Ify generously imparted invaluable advice to me, emphasising the essence of perseverance, authenticity, and continual growth in the ever-evolving media landscape.
“Tessy, I’m proud of you,” she said. I felt like I just received an alert of N100 billion! But again, it’s done on me that I’m just starting. It’s not every day you receive counsel from someone who’s navigated the industry with such grace and success.
Ify’s mentorship and guidance were beacons. Ify’s invitation underscored the significance of mentorship and growth. To be invited was an honour. It reaffirmed my progress and ignited a fire within me to aspire for the international stage.
It was an honour to witness Ify Onyegbule being recognised by the City People Special Award of Excellence for her trailblazing contributions to the media sector. As Ify gracefully accepted her award, her words of wisdom resonated deeply within me.
She shared invaluable advice drawn from her own journey, emphasising the importance of perseverance and continuous growth in our respective roles. Her encouragement fueled our ambition, and her insights into the intricacies of media leadership were both enlightening and inspiring.
As we gathered alongside a constellation of veterans, Nonye Osii, Monday Michaels Ashibogwu, Kris Ekuafeh Ero, Precious Ezeh, Akushie Patrick, and Tomisin Adebukola (Madam Ify’s friends and pals), I found myself amid an incredible blend of experience and passion for our craft.
It was surreal to be among such accomplished figures. Reflecting on her tenure as DG (Ify clocked a year on November 29, 2023), Ify shared her experiences, acknowledging the challenges and triumphs of steering a prominent broadcasting corporation. Her insights were a testament to her resilience and vision. It was a masterclass in leadership and dedication, I must say.
As the night concluded, amidst laughter and shared stories, I left with a heart brimming with gratitude and a resolve to forge ahead. Ify’s belief in reaching the next level, including international fellowship, echoed our aspirations, igniting a renewed sense of purpose within me.
It was a night I’ll forever cherish—an evening that not only celebrated excellence but also sowed the seeds for future achievements. In the realm of media, where talent meets mentorship, the hangout was not just a convergence of individuals—it was a testament to the power of inspiration, guidance, and the promise of ascending to greater heights in the ever-evolving world of media.
As we departed, new friendships had been formed, the exchange of ideas and connections fostered, and the shared enthusiasm for our craft left us invigorated, ready to embark on our respective journeys, armed with wisdom and encouragement from the incredible gathering in Lagos.
