The collaboration, the two firms said, is aimed at addressing methane emissions and combating global warming and climate change.
This collaboration follows the NNPCL’s active participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) held in Dubai, UAE, where the company identified and explored innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, “the agreement allows for the deployment of TotalEnergies’ AUSEA, a cutting-edge methane detection technology, on the company’s upstream sites.
The primary objective is to assess methane emissions levels and formulate effective measures to curtail emissions, contributing to the global fight against global warming.”
The MoU was officially signed by Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Upstream, and Matthieu Bouyer, Managing Director and Country Chair of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria, representing their respective companies.
Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan stated that the initial phase of AUSEA deployment would be implemented on NNPC Ltd’s owned operations, facilitating the adoption of methane abatement measures.
“Beyond emission control, the TotalEnergies AUSEA technology offers additional advantages, including the identification of unaccounted emission sources, enhancement of emission reporting processes, data provision for system reviews, corrective actions, and the estimation of flare combustion efficiency.”
The signing ceremony, witnessed by NNPC Limited’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, marked a significant step towards advancing environmentally sustainable practices in the energy sector.
Mele Kyari expressed appreciation for TotalEnergies’ longstanding partnership in anticipating further collaborative opportunities in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Patrick Pouyanné commended NNPCL for its successful transition into a limited liability company, emphasising the positive energy generated by recent reforms in the company and the sector at large.
Pouyanné underscored his company’s commitment to promoting responsible hydrocarbon production, with the technology transfer serving as a testament to TotalEnergies’ dedication to environmental stewardship.
