The Chief Executive Officer of the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria, Dr Lelia Dongo, has said that the institute remains committed to spearheading research, fostering innovation, and contributing to the sustainable growth of the agricultural sector.
Dongo, who stated this at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the institute in Benin recently, said that from pioneering research initiatives to fostering sustainable practices, RRIN had been at the forefront of transforming the rubber landscape.
She noted that the celebration was not only to reminisce about past achievements but also to look forward to a future filled with new possibilities.
She said the golden jubilee anniversary was a momentous occasion symbolising not just the passage of time, but the continuous pursuit of excellence and progress in research and development in the rubber industry.
Meanwhile, Dongo said that the institute’s achievements included the development of improved high-yielding and disease-resistant rubber clones, increased rubber production in Nigeria with 482 hectares of tappable rubber plantation, increased gum Arabic production in Nigeria with 46 hectares of matured gum Arabic trees and development of technology for processing of latex into various marketable products.
According to the RRIN boss, other achievements are processed rubber seed oil from rubber seeds, a raw material for cosmetics, paint, liquid soap, seed cake for animals, fertiliser, and putty. She added the institute was also in the development of an innovative approach to rubber, and agroforestry that promotes and contributes to food security, and dissemination pathways for technology transfer to rubber farmers and stakeholders.
She declared, “This event is more than a celebration; it is a reflection of five decades of tireless dedication, research, innovation and contribution to the rubber industry. It is an opportunity to acknowledge and honour the journey that has brought us here, a journey marked by challenges met with resilience, discovery fuelled by curiosity, and advancement driven by a shared vision.
“As we stand on the precipe of a new era for RRIN, I use this moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff, partners, stakeholders and collaborators, who have been part of our story and instrumental to our success. Your unwavering support has been the driving force behind our accomplishment, and we are thankful for the trust and camaraderie that has defined our collaboration.”
On his part, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliu Abdullahi, who was represented by the Director of Food Production, Iwara Bassey, said the institute had played a pivotal role by advancing research, innovation, and sustainable practices in the rubber industry.
“The institute has been a beacon of excellence while contributing to the growth and resilience of the rubber sector while urging stakeholders to continue to support the Institute in it is a mission to enhance productivity, promote sustainability and contribute positively to the overall landscape of the agricultural sector,” he stated.
The minister said the institute, in the face of evolving challenges, had adapted and thrived, showcasing of resilience and a spirit of continuous improvement.
