The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership has called on the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to regulate and monitor revenues and funds allocated to civil servants and retirees in the country.
The call came on the heels of concerns about abolishing life pensions for ex-government officials and the continuous wastage of government funds.
Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission recovered a combined sum of N27,184,357,524.52 and $19,084,419.33 from three different money laundering cases, as further efforts were being made by the anti-graft agency to recover more illicit funds.
It was gathered that some former governors, ex-ministers, and several government officials across the federation, were involved following the receipt of several petitions.
Also, it was reported that some former governors received life pensions, exotic cars and other benefits from their states while they served as ministers.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, CACOL Executive Chairman, Debo Adeniran, said there was a need to regulate funds going out of the Federal Account, adding that any fund that goes out without the knowledge of RMAFC and NSIWC should be termed stealing and the culprit should be charged immediately.
He said, “The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission should be the one to regulate that and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission should regulate what the civil servants take.
“Once anything goes out of all of this regulation, it should be termed stealing and members of the national assembly who accepted what has not been allocated by the RMAFC should be charged with stealing, morally they should not have accepted it during this period.”
Also, Adeniran said the government should ensure that Nigerians benefitted from governance, advising the officials not to see government as an avenue to embezzle funds.
