The State Governor, Babagana Zulum, made this known at a meeting with the leadership of transport unions in the state in Maiduguri, on Thursday.
Zulum’s announcement followed his warning last Monday at the Nigeria-Cameroon border town of Gamboru that axle loads exceeding 100 tonnes on the Maiduguri-Gamboru-Ngala Road amount to economic sabotage.
He had vented his anger at the driver of an overloaded truck he accosted along the road.
“Weighbridges will be installed on some strategic roads to ensure that owners and operators of heavy trucks adhere to load restrictions on highways,” Zulum announced to the transport union leaders.
“A bill will be sent to the state House of Assembly for the review of existing road and transportation laws to provide explicit and stern punishment for violators of the law,” he added.
Zulum warned transport unions, comprising the Road Transport Workers Union of Nigeria, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and Clearance Agents Association against violating the state’s load restriction law.
The governor warned that the government would impose severe penalties, including jail terms, on drivers violating the load restriction laws in the state.
He emphasised the importance of adhering to load restrictions as mandated by the government’s transportation regulations.
