The Africa Film Academy, the organisers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards, has unveiled plans and activities ahead of its 20th edition.
The Designated Chair/CEO of the AFA board, Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, stated that the decision to unveil the plans and activities ahead of the 20th edition of the continental film awards was deliberate to ensure the involvement of as many film practitioners in Africa and Diaspora as possible.
He said, “This is an avenue to officially end the 19th edition of the AMAAs under the supervision of the Africa Film Academy, and begin the journey to AMAA 2024, which will serve as a testimony to African creativity as we celebrate and toast to the founder, late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe and her contributions in placing African films and filmmakers on the global stage, as well as 20 years of AMAA, which showcases the finest in African film and cinematography.
“We invite filmmakers to submit their feature, film shorts, animation, and documentary works for consideration in the nearly 30 film categories of the awards.”
Anyiam-Osigwe added that one of the reasons for creating AMAA was to create a networking platform and avenue for African filmmakers and practitioners to interact, while getting rewarded for their creativity, uniqueness, authenticity and professionalism.
He also stated that Lagos State remained the host state, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu would return as the host for the 20th edition of the recognition event.
On his part, Shaibu Husseini, who is the head of AMAA’s College of Screeners, and Director General of the Nigeria Film and Video Censors Board, stated that the academy does not encourage films that don’t involve Africans or filmmakers of African descent.
