Osun State Government in an advertorial published in some national dailies last Thursday, disclosed plans to recruit 5,000 teachers, urging interested persons to apply through a portal dedicated to the recruitment.
But addressing journalists in Osogbo on Wednesday, the Osun State CDHR chairman, Emmanuel Olowu, said 5,000 fell short of the number of teachers that participants in the education summit organised by the government said public schools in the state would need.
He said, “Besides, the recent decision of the state government to employ an additional 5,000 teachers raises eyebrows.
“The recruitment of the 5,000 falls short of the reported shortage of all subject teachers in our public schools as reported by the Osun 2024 Education Summit which highlighted that 84.5% schools in Osun State currently lack teachers for all subjects.
“CDHR therefore, calls on the Osun State Government to reevaluate its approach to tackling the education crisis, ensuring that the guidelines on teachers’ elongation policy are fully implemented, and the state should jack up the numbers of teachers it intends to employ to 8,000.”
Speaking further, Olowu said the state government should immediately commence the full implementation of the Teachers’ Elongation policy from the retirement age of 60 to 65 years.
He also called for immediate implementation of the reclassification of schools back to 6,3,3,4 policy as stated in the white paper issued after the education summit.
