In celebration of The PUNCH 50th anniversary, the eagerly anticipated novelty game between The PUNCHERS and Media Amalgamated – which comprises journalists from other newspaper houses in the country – holds today.
The PUNCHERS will go up against Media Amalgamated, a select group of journalists from Tribune, Nation, Vanguard, Business Day, ThisDay, Leadership, Telegraph and The Guardian newspapers at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, February 24.
Speaking ahead of the game, team captain Godpower Otor, said they were confident of getting the result against their opponents.
“We’ve been trading very hard and we will give our best to ensure we don’t let our supporters down,” he said.
“We know the Media Amalgamated team has been playing together for a while and we are just playing as a team for the first time but we are PUNCHERS and we don’t let our guards down. We will give them a run for their money to ensure we get the result.
“It is going to be a great and exciting game and we want people to come out and enjoy themselves.”
The PUNCHERS, under the watchful eyes of former Super Eagles midfielder, Friday Ekpo, underwent a five-day training session to put the team in good shape ahead of the game.
While Friday Ekpo, Africa Cup of Nations 1992 bronze medallist, has been given the tough task of handling PUNCHERS, Victor Agali is the man in charge of Media Amalgamated.
In the spirit of friendship, both sides trained together at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Lagos, on Friday.
The highly anticipated and potentially explosive novelty match marks the commencement of an array of epoch-making activities for the 50th-anniversary celebration of Nigeria’s most-read newspaper.
The mouth-watering encounter between the two sides will hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos by 10am.
