Tennis stars Oyinlomo Quadre, Christopher Bulus and Marylove Edwards top the list of eight players named by the Nigeria Tennis Federation to represent the country for the 13th Africa Games in Accra, Ghana, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The list which includes four men and four women also features veterans Abubakar Yusuf and Uche Oparaoji.
Others included in Nigeria’s tennis squad for the African Games are Wilson Igbinovia Adesuwa Osabuohien, Divine Nweke.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s tennis team will travel to Accra next Monday.
Team Nigeria hopes to improve on the two bronze medals they secured at the 2019 Games in Rabat. Quadre, a player for Florida International University and a previous bronze medalist in doubles and team events, will be aiming for a singles medal this time around.
The tennis event which serves off on March 16.
Meanwhile, Osabuohien who is ranked 1252nd in the WTA admits that she’s under pressure to win gold in Ghana.
The US-based tennis star captained the Nigerian Billie Jean King Cup team to Kenya in 2023.
She told Nigeria Tennis Live that she is gradually adjusting to the weather in the country but that she is ready and cannot wait to star at the African Games in Ghana.
“I’m so excited and it’s another great opportunity and I’m ready to go far,”she told Nigeria Tennis Live.
“Last time, we got bronze so we need to do way better and go for gold.
“Our chances are very high. We have a strong thing, most likely the same team for the Billie Jean Cup, so, we’ve all been training, talking from our different training zones. And we’re very excited to put in the work to bring back the gold to Nigeria.”
