The founders of the Afrika Fashion League— Benard Otunola and Adebayo Ilupeju— have announced the return of the 90-minute challenge, which is scheduled to hold in April.
Speaking at a media parley during the week, Ilupeju noted that it was possible to create an outfit in 90 minutes, which was the concept behind the challenge.
He said, “We are interested in fashion across Africa. Afrika Fashion League aims to showcase African fashion to the world, and inspire fashion businesses on the continent to grow.
“If you take a look at most individual fashion collections, you will notice that people are willing to spend more money on foreign brands, rather than in our country. So, AFL aims to encourage fashion designers to create value and make our products more appealing.”
Ilupeju added that prospective applicants were expected to post five pictures on social media with specific hashtags that people will have to like, share and vote. According to him, the people with highest number of votes would be selected to partake in the challenge. He added that anybody from the age of 16 and above were eligible to apply.
He also stated that a total of 24 designers would be selected to participate in the challenge. Prizes to be won include cash, industrial sewing machine, industrial pressing irons, mentoring opportunities, courses among others.
Judges on past editions of the challenge include the founder and creative director of KolaKuddus Couture, Kola Kuddus; a London, United Kingdom-based fashion designer, Adebayo Jones; and fashion brand manager, Vivian Odofin.
