The exercise themed “Klean up Igbokoda,” which was led by the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Igbokoda, Navy Captain Mamman Alushi, was said to be part of the social responsibility of the military base towards ensuring a clean environment.
Speaking on the exercise, on Tuesday, the FOB Commanding Officer stated that it was not the first time the base was engaging the host community in such an exercise.
It was gathered that the total area covered during the clean-up was about five kilometres.
He explained, “The exercise is a routine and geared towards relating with the civil population more closely in a more beneficial way.
“The exercise aligns with current strategic military thinking in the country, where emphasis is on population security.”
The Navy boss described national security as multi-faceted, which should not only be viewed from the application of military force but also viewed more broadly from the prism of human security, which includes environmental and health security.
In his remarks, the founder of Dakiz Human Development Initiative, Mr T. Akingbade, lauded the commanding officer and men of the FOB Igbokoda for partnering with his organization to ensure Igbokoda residents had a clean and safe environment.
He further charged residents to avoid dumping refuse in drainage and waterways so as not to disrupt the free flow of erosion.
