Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is known to be a showman with an unmistakable sense of humour, so it did not take many by surprise when he ‘performed’ at a comedy show organised by Olamilekan Abegunde, aka Dr Smile, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun state.
According to a statement sent to Society Plus, Obasanjo was said to have performed alongside popular comedians, such as Alibaba, Funnybone, Senator, and Baba Alariya.
Obasanjo, who had joined other fun seekers to grace the occasion, obliged Alibaba and Dr Smile who had teased him to take the microphone and perform on stage.
Speaking in English and pidgin, he threw some jabs at the comedians. He said, “Na jeje I sit down for house when Vitalis (his aide) call me say make I come here, and I no know say Alibaba go dey here (I was in my house when Vitalis called me to come here. I didn’t know Alibaba will be here).
“If I know say Alibaba go dey here, I for no come because Ali baba go don tell many lies against me (If I knew Alibaba would be here, I wouldn’t have attended, because I know he (Alibaba) would have told many lies against me).”
The former president, who went on to praise the artistes in the entertainment industry, advised them to continue staying true to their course.
Also throwing a jab at Obasanjo, Dr Smile described him as an ‘up-and-coming act’, saying, “We don’t have any money to pay. We don’t pay up-and-coming comedians. We just appreciate them for coming.”
He also thanked the elder statesman for supporting the entertainment industry.
