Senator Sabi Abdullahi representing Niger North Senatorial district has sponsored a private bill to tackle hate speeches and other social media related contents considered antagonistic to the interest of Nigerian society.
The lawmaker who was Senate Spokesman in the 8th Senate and now Deputy Chief Whip wants the National Assembly to establish a Commission with administrative structures to deal with hate speeches in Nigeria.
The bill titled: “National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speeches (Est., etc) bill, 2019 (SB. 154)” passed through first reading on Tuesday.
The bill would be presented for second reading any moment.
In line with the Parliamentary procedure, a short title of a bill which is presented for the first reading would only be read by the Clerk to the Senate on orders of the Senate President.
The bill which reflected in number 12 of Tuesday’s order paper is set for second reading and is expected to pass through third reading at the upper and lower chambers before presidential assent.
