The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing its oversight function over the Nigeria Police Force, with a focus on capacity building and leadership development. This was the core message delivered by PSC Chairman, Dr. Solomon Arase, at a one-day capacity building workshop on leadership and decision-making in crisis and emergencies.
Held today, Thursday, May 23rd, 2024 at the Parry Osayande Auditorium, Corporate Headquarters of the Commission in Jabi, Abuja, the workshop brought together Directorate Staff of the PSC to enhance their knowledge and skills in effective oversight and decision-making. Dr. Arase, represented by Dr. Ogbonna Nwota, emphasized that the Commission’s duty of effective oversight of the Police “will remain a paper tiger if the Commission is not strengthened and repositioned through capacity building training programmes.”
The PSC Chairman highlighted the importance of leadership competency, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and deep understanding of professional guidelines and statutory provisions in decision-making, particularly in crisis and emergency situations. He stressed that decision-making in crisis situations requires greater understanding, tact, carefulness, caution, and high sense of rationality.
Dr. Arase commended the staff of the Commission for their efforts, commitment, and cooperation, which have contributed to the successes recorded in the past one year. He noted that the dynamic nature of modern society will continue to confront the Nigeria Police Force and the Commission, and therefore, emphasized the need for continuity in excellent service delivery to the nation.t
The workshop, organized by Royal Bull Consulting in collaboration with Zenith Bank, is part of the Commission’s recurring training and retraining programs aimed at repositioning the Commission for greater efficiency and effectiveness in delivering on its mandate.
In conclusion, the PSC Chairman’s emphasis on capacity building and leadership development underscores the Commission’s commitment to effective oversight and accountability in policing. As the nation continues to evolve, it is imperative that the Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Force adapt and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the challenges of modern society.
