A 41-year-old man, Wilfred Igwe, is seeking the sum of N30 million to undergo another kidney transplant after the initial transplant failed due to complications.
It was gathered that Igwe, a native of Ebonyi State suffered a kidney failure in 2020 after which he underwent a transplant. However, the transplant encountered medical complications leading to its failure three years later.
Narrating his experience to our correspondent, he said, “The first transplant was in 2020. We went to the hospital in Lagos Island and there was a transplant. It was early this year that the transplanted kidney failed. I was working with a company before as an accountant but presently I am having dialysis in the hospital so I cannot work.”
Our correspondent learned that Igwe was supposed to undergo dialysis on Friday but could not go ahead with the procedure due to financial constraints.
“At the moment, I cannot urinate, but I couldn’t do the dialysis yesterday (Friday) because of money. The hospital said the new transplant will cost N30 million because, after the transplant, there are still some tests and other procedures that will be performed.
“The past few months have been a trying time for me and my family, as I am trying to cope with the challenges of dialysis three times a week while awaiting a kidney transplant,” he said.
In the medical report obtained by our correspondent, Igwe is said to be a “hypertensive and three-year post-live-donor renal transplant with end-stage renal disease who is on maintenance haemodialysis.”
The report noted, “The cost of renal transplant is N15 million. This covers the cost of Donor Nephrectomy and actual transplant surgery; post-operative admission for donor and recipient for two weeks post-transplant; and two weeks of standard anti-rejection drugs post-transplant. However, there might be the need to use additional medications which may be billed separately.
“Following the transplant, the recipient would need to remain on regular immune suppressive to prevent rejection of the graft.”
Igwe appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to come to his aid in raising the funds to undergo a successful kidney transplant and post-transplant procedure.
“After the transplant, another problem is usually the medication. I haven’t been able to manage the medication even till now,” he added.
