Members of the Christ Apostolic Church Grammar School, Efon-Alaye Alumni Association have launched a N50m endowment fund to support knowledge-driven initiatives aimed at assisting the students of their alma mater.
At the recent event held in Lagos, the association also honoured former students of the school who have distinguished themselves in their chosen professions.
Some of the award recipients, who are former students of the school, included the Governor of Ekiti, Mr Biodun Oyebanji; Justice Johnson Apuabi; Dr Adekunle Ojo, SAN; Prof. Adio Afolayan; Prof. Dipo Kolawole; Pharm. John Oni; Prince Aderogba Agbaje and Engr Suyi Dada.
Other are Mr Lucas Olu Daramola, SAN; Pharm. Olayemi Ajayi and Comptroller Kola Bamisaye.
The President-General of the association, Adekunle Ojo, SAN, told The PUNCH that the funds would enable the association to provide training to help students become better individuals in society.
He said, “This is a double-barrelled event. The first is to launch an endowment fund for our school. This is about the education of the students. This has nothing to do with the structural interventions. We have a separate fund for that. The fund is knowledge-based. We believe this will help the students in a better way.
“The fund will be used to care for the less privileged students. We are going to look beyond the box because education in the country seems to no longer rubbing on society. We will take them through training that can help. We will pay for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination of the indigent students.”
He noted that the honours given to the awardees were to recognise and appreciate their contributions to humanity.
He added, “The second is about appreciating the people who have done well in their chosen profession. We have about 20 people that are being inducted into the CAPOSTO Hall of Fame today.
“We are going to build an Alumni house where their names will be fixed to the wall of the premises. They have done pretty well.”
Speaking on the theme “Reconnecting CAPOSTO to the National Education Grid,” Gbenga Oluwaniyi, an alumnus of the school, urged other associations and groups to support the government in revamping the education sector.
He said, “The topic is an attempt to look at the state of education generally with a specific focus on CAPOSTO, which we represent and came from. The general story is that there’s a decline from what used to be to what we currently have.
“The funding structures of our elementary school can’t be dependent on the Federal Government alone.”
