The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

Dr. Dangut expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of the examination, which spanned for seven weeks, from 30th April to 24th June, 2024.
Despite significant challenges, including security concerns due to the “Sit-at-home” order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) and industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the examination was conducted without major disruptions.
The 2024 WASSCE, according to Dr. Dangut, being the first to be conducted in his administration of the exam, had one million, eight hundred and fourteen thousand, seven hundred and thirty-six (1,814,736) candidates registered from twenty-five thousand, one hundred and twenty-six (25,126) recognized Secondary Schools across Nigeria.
Of these, one million, eighthundredandfive thousand, two hundred and sixteen (1,805,216) candidates sat for the examination, including one hundred and nine thousand, one hundred and fifteen (109,115) candidates with special needs, who were adequately accommodated.
A key highlight of this year’s results is the strong performance by female candidates. Of the 1,805,216 candidates who sat the examination, eight hundred and Ninety-six thousand, eight hundred and Ninety-four (896,894) were males while nine hundred and eight thousand, three hundred and twenty-two (908,322) were females, representing 49.68% and 50.32%, respectively.
Notably, 673,121 female candidates (51.70%) obtained credits in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, which outclassed their male counterparts of 628,820 i.e. 48.30%.
The overall performance saw 1,301,941 candidates (72.12%) obtaining credits in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. However, this represents a 7.69% decrease compared to the 79.81% recorded in 2023.
In terms of examination malpractice, WAEC reported a significant decrease. The results of 215,267 candidates, representing 11.92% of the total candidates, are being withheld due to suspected malpractice. This figure is 4.37% lower than the 16.29% recorded in the previous year.
Dr. Dangut noted that investigations are ongoing, and the Council will take appropriate actions against those involved.
WAEC also introduced innovative measures during the marking process, including real-time capturing and transfer of candidates’ scores on a digitized platform. This technology was successfully piloted in Lagos and is expected to be rolled out across the country to ensure more transparent and reliable scoring.
As the results are being uploaded online, candidates are encouraged to apply for their digital certificates 48 hours after checking their results. The Council also highlighted the ongoing registration for the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024 – Second Series, and introduced new digital tools such as the WaecKonnect Mobile App and WAEC e-Study to aid candidates’ preparation.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Dangut thanked Nigeria government, education stakeholders, and the media for their continued support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the examinations.
He also urged all stakeholders to join hands in maintaining the integrity of the education system in Nigeria.
