In a bid towards enhancing the skills of media practitioners in Nigeria, the Centre for Continuing Professional Education of the Faculty of Philology at RUDN University, Russia, in collaboration with the University of Lagos (UNILAG), have successfully hosted a one-day professional training programme focused on entrepreneurial journalism.
The event, held on Tuesday, August 20th, 2024 at the Centre of Excellence, Biodun Sobanjo Building, Dept of Mass Communications, University of Lagos, in Lagos State was offered free of charge to participants.
Empowering Media Professionals through Entrepreneurial Journalism
The programme drew diverse group of participants, including scholars, researchers, students, and seasoned professionals, all eager to deepen their understanding of entrepreneurial journalism—a vital area in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.
The sessions were meticulously crafted to address critical gaps in professional practice, equipping attendees with the tools necessary to thrive in a competitive market.
Prof. Muhammad Jamiu Mustapha, a distinguished academic from RUDN University, and Mr. Lekan Otunfodurin, Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, led the training sessions. Their combined expertise provided participants with a rich blend of theoretical knowledge and practical applications in the field of journalism.
Fostering Ethical and Innovative Journalism Practices
Mr. Otunfodurin’s session was particularly engaging, as he introduced attendees to the foundational principles of media ethics, emphasizing the importance of accuracy, fairness, and transparency. He underscored that maintaining high ethical standards is crucial for journalists aiming to build trust and credibility with their audiences.
Otunfodurin shared contemporary journalism practices, particularly the increasing influence of digital media and social platforms. He highlighted how changing audience habits necessitate a shift in journalistic approaches, urging participants to adapt and innovate in their storytelling methods.
His session also explored the intersection of journalism and entrepreneurship, encouraging attendees to develop business acumen alongside their reporting skills.
According to Otunfodurin, the combination of ethical journalism and entrepreneurial skills are key to thriving in the modern media environment.
Branding: A Cornerstone of Entrepreneurial Success
The subsequent session led by Prof. Mustapha delved into the concept of entrepreneurial journalism, which merges traditional reporting skills with business strategies to create sustainable and innovative media ventures. A critical element of his presentation was the exploration of branding as an essential tool for success in the digital age.
Prof. Mustapha emphasized the role of personal and professional branding in building a journalist’s identity. He guided participants through case studies and practical exercises designed to help them develop a unique brand voice. By understanding and leveraging branding, journalists can better engage their audiences and position themselves effectively in the marketplace.
The training was not limited to Lagos; as it was simultaneously held in Kaduna, Rivers, and Osun states, extending its impact across Nigeria.
Upcoming Online Diploma Programmes by RUDN University
In continuation of its commitment to professional development, the Center for Continuing Professional Education of the Faculty of Philology, RUDN University has announced the opening of registration for its online Diploma Programmes in Policy Communication and Law Enforcement Communication.
These programmes, offered in collaboration with CEREDEMS Africa and other partners, are set to commence in September 2024. The six-month virtual classes are tailored to meet the needs of working professionals, making them ideal for public relations professionals, political office holders, media aides, legal aides, and security advisers, among others.
This initiative underscores RUDN University’s dedication to fostering professional growth and equipping participants with the skills necessary to thrive in their respective fields.
