The Niger State Security Committee on COVID-19 has impounded about twenty-three vehicles carrying 281 passengers against the lockdown order of the State Government.
The committee also arrested four tricycles, (Keke Napep) and two motorcycles over the same offence.
Addressing newsmen after monitoring the level of compliance to the directives, the Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner of Police, Adamu Usman said the cars were impounded for going against the lockdown order of the Niger State Government.
According to him, the impounded vehicles including two trailers, fifteen buses, six vehicles, and two motorcycles are presently stationed at the Maitumbi and B Division Police stations in Minna.
The Commissioner also expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance with the sit-at-home order by the people in order to curtail the spread of the pandemic in the state.
“Also, there is need for political office holders in Niger State to return to their constituency and sensitize their people on the need to adhere strictly to the Lockdown directives of government and also abide by experts’ advice to stay clear of Coronavirus,” the Commissioner said.
Usman further stated that in order to reduce the influx of people and vehicles into the state, ” the committee is planning to provide the four entry or exit points of Bida, Gwada, Kontagora, Suleja, and Kontagora roads with concrete barriers.
The security team made up of the Army, Customs, Immigration, Police, FRSC, NSCDC, NDLEA, DSS and Correctional Service among others are patrolling Bosso, Chanchaga Local governments to monitor the level of compliance.
