The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), on Wednesday, said vehicle owners have no intentions of increasing transportation fares.
NURTW’s Acting General Secretary, Kabiru Yau explained that the body has no intention and cannot increase the cost of transportation in Nigeria.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, Yau said: “I wish to state that the NURTW is a workers union that has the interest of Nigeria and the general public at heart.
“It is not our intention or in our place to increase the cost of transportation in the country. The car owners are the ones saddled with that responsibility.
“The union will continue to do everything within its power to ensure the peace and safety of travelers and Nigerians.”
The federal government had last week lifted the ban on inter-state movement, amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
Guidelines issued by the government to this effect had required commercial vehicles to carry fewer passengers, thereby reducing the transporters’ income.
