Rev. Fr. Joachim Cabanyes, of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu has died of COVID-19 related complications.
The Catholic Diocese of Enugu announced the death of the priest in a statement by Rev. Fr. Nkemjika Igweshi, Secretary to Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, Bishop of the Diocese.
He died at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital isolation centre.
According to the statement, Fr. Cabanyes was a Spanish priest of the Opus Dei Prelature who worked in Enugu Diocese and had served the Nigerian Church for about 28 years.
Igweshi described the departed priest a nice, easy-going, cordial, generous, prayerful, and dedicated pastor.
“He hailed from Spain but loved our people so much and always attended our diocesan functions.”
The statement noted that the Rev. Father’s has been buried according to the NCDC guidelines.
While calling on Catholic faithful to pray for his peaceful repose, the statement warned that COVID-19 is real, “and we will do well to observe all the necessary health precautions and safety measures.”
