The speedy growth of the hair cut industry in Nigeria is attracting more youths because of its many opportunities. The hair cut business that was an occupation for the old is now dominated by young graduate from different disciplines. A barber is someone who creatively cuts, shaves, grooms and styles hair and is not limited to males as women have joined as well. Investors and entreprenuers are overlooking this business that is cabable of making them millions.
Mr. Oyedare Olatunji popularly known as Teejay celebrity Barber is one of those happy and proud with barbing as a business. In an elusive chat with Gatmash Blog in his Ikeja G.R.A office, in Lagos, he talks about the profitability of the trade, challenges, lack of sponsors, and more.
“My name is Oyedare Olatunji popularly known as Teejay celebrity Barber, from Osun state; a graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin where I studied Banking and Finance. After my graduation I worked a little with Capital Express Insurance company in Lagos but things was very tough I had to practice a barbing skill I acquired when I was in school. Little did I know that it will be my livelihood. However, I find it so interesting anytime do a hair cut for someone so gradually I was so passionate about it to the extent that I developed my skills professionally. Therefore I started working in a reputable Barber shop in Lagos. In fact, I have worked in so many barbershops which I can boldly say that am an experience and a professional”.
As a professional barber how profitable is the business. “Barbing is very lucrative; at least I feed my family with it comfortably. Am a married man with a wife and three kids and I make between N10,000 to 15,000 a day in the shop aside home service and tips. Though the business has its highs and lows but nothing beat how creative you are and how you take your job seriously.”
Speaking on his barbing skills, Teejay said his barbing abilities includes skin fades, beard shaping scissor and clipper over comb, ladies hair cut, style with dye and more but an amazing hair cut is achieve with the ability to be creative to combine the facial structure and the hair type to bring out a nice look. You must be a barber that is very standard to showcase your talent and also to make sure your clients are very comfortable”.
Teejay talked about his dream and his hurdle. “It has been my desire to have a standard barbershop and also a barbing academy to be able to teach as many people that have interests in the profession. Regarding this, am looking forward for sponsorship to make this dream achievable”.
With your experience in this trade, what are the challenges? “I have been working professional for about 10 years now from one salon to the other simply because a barber can only receive 15% to 20% of whatever his making monthly. Salon owner’s make it difficult and tough for barbers to have capital to start up there own place and it’s a painful thing. Basically, it’s really expensive to rent a good shop and equip it. Moreover, my biggest challenge in this business is that most salon owners are very selfish and wicked. They never respect barbers so to speak, they use them to achieve there goes and also use the barbers to develop their barbershop and pay them peanut. Also it’s difficult for a barber to own a standard salon without been sponsored”.
Can you tell us what other privilege the business has offered you in the course of doing what you love? “I have the privilege to meet and interact with people from all walks of life and I have many artists and politicians as my clients till date.
