The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has reacted to the military coup in Mali and the resignation of President of Ibrahim Keita.
DAILY POST reported that a military coup on Tuesday led to the resignation of President Keita after several months of protests by Malians over his government.
Soldiers had arrested the president and some top government officials on Tuesday.
Shortly after the incident, Keita announced his resignation and dissolved his cabinet.
He had said, “I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power,” BBC quoted him as saying.
Reacting, Onyema in a tweet on Wednesday condemned the development.
He, however, called for an immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.
He said, “The Nigerian Government unequivocally condemns the coup d’état that took place in #Mali yesterday and demands the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.
“We welcome the urgent activation of the #ECOWAS Standby force.”
