
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, a Nigerian educationist and career examination administrator, as its new Registrar/Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Dangut assumed office on October 1, 2026, beginning a five-year tenure that will run until September 2031. He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia and becomes the 14th Registrar to Council.
His appointment was ratified by WAEC’s International Governing Board at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Academic Foundation
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds qualifications in both agricultural science and educational administration.
He earned a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production in 1991, followed by a Master of Science in Animal Science in 1994. He later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science in 2017 and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning in 2020.
A Career Built Within WAEC
Dangut’s professional career began in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he worked in education and served as a WAEC examiner.
He joined WAEC as a staff member in 1998, beginning a career that took him through test development, examination security, branch administration, post-examination operations and zonal coordination.
His early assignment was in the Test Development Division at WAEC’s Ogba office in Lagos, where he served as Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer from July 1998 to January 2005.
He subsequently worked in examination security and branch administration at the Uyo and Bauchi offices, before becoming Branch Controller at the Yola office in December 2011. He held the Yola position until January 2019.
He was later appointed Deputy Registrar/Controller, Post Examinations Department, serving from January 2019 to October 2020.
From October 2020 to August 2023, he served as Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator at the Ikeja Zonal Office, followed briefly by an assignment at the Head of National Office’s Office.
Leadership of WAEC Nigeria
On October 2, 2023, Dangut became Head of National Office of WAEC, Nigeria, a position he held until his appointment as Registrar to Council.
His elevation to the Council’s international leadership followed more than two decades of experience within the organisation and placed him in charge of an institution whose examination activities serve countries across the West African sub-region.
Focus on Testing and Technology
WAEC describes Dangut as an experienced test developer and administrator, with expertise covering test development, examination administration and branch and zonal office management.
The Council also credited him with using information and communications technology for more than two decades to improve processes in test development, post-examination activities and examination administration.
Recognition for Service
His professional record has earned formal recognition during his career.
The Nigeria Examinations Committee commended him for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006.
He also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government and Akoko South Local Government during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service.
