Concerned indigenes of Nanka community, Orumba North LGA of Anambra State have urged the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Uju Nworgu to quickly wade into the crisis in the community to avoid a breakdown of law and order.
The Indigenes, under the aegis of Nanka People’s Assembly (NPA), said Nworgu withdrew a matter it instituted against a faction of the community’s leadership, Nanka Patriotic Union (NPU), with a promise to bring all involved to a table for an amicable settlement, but has long failed to do so.
President General of NPA, Mr Emmanuel Ezeume who addressed a press conference in Awka on Thursday said it took NPU to court for forging the signatures of some prominent people in the community, to impose a fake constitution on them.
“That is a forgery, and it is a criminal matter and should be allowed to run its course, but we heard that the attorney general has withdrawn the matter from the court, with the promise of bringing both parties together for an amicable settlement.
“We are appealing to the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Mrs Uju Nwogu to expedite action towards resolving the constitutional crisis rocking the community as she promised, or return the matter to court to let it run its full course,” the group said.
There has been a crisis in Nanka community over the alleged introduction of an ‘alien’ constitution by the NPU, which gives the (NPU) the power to crown a new monarch and also proscribe two out of the seven villages that make up the community.
Efforts to reach the Attorney General and for Justice yielded no fruit, but a source in the ministry who pleaded anonymity said the commissioner was still studying the file, to bringing the parties involved together for settlement soon.
“The case is one of those being treated. All the litigations, legal cases and issues related to law are domiciled in the office. If they have feelings that nothing is being done to their files, let them visit the office to trace their files.
“There is no way the government would leave them to continue in crisis. I am sure the office is seriously working to resolve this case. Anambra state under governor Willie Obiano is always working assiduously to entrench peace in all nooks and crannies of the state,” the source said.
