Governor Nyesome Wike of Rivers State has come under attack for placing a ban on protests in the State.
Recall that Wike in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications in the State, on Monday banned the End SARS protest, which is to take place, today, Tuesday October 13, 2020.
According to him, the decision to ban the proposed protest follows the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad by the Inspector General of Police.
But reacting, Nigerians on social media who vowed to continue their protest in Port Harcout, maintained that Wike had no constitutional right to ban protest.
Here are comments DAILY POST gathered on Twitter:
@Edidong_ “Wike has always been a dictator at heart, a borderline psychopath. Said this before and I say it again.”
@Ayobankole,”Nyesom Wike is the biggest shocker of a disgrace and nuisance of a leader since this #SARSMUSTEND movement started. Imagine the nerve in that “order”. Such God complex. Man needs a brain surgery.”
@iderey, “What kind of maniacal ego will make you see Nigerians protesting #SARSMUSTEND for days and decide that you are the one to ban them?”
@pouiyomike, ”Port Harcourt People our protest continues today, Gov Wike has said his own, I’m getting ready to leave my house now for the protest, our voices most be heard. Come out for the protest today. Time 9am. Pleasure Park meeting point.”
@Nedunaija, ”They said Wike is a lawyer. Must have ranked amongst the last 3 in all his classes. Crude. Zero civility.”
@yemifash, “Only a Tyrant will try to stop citizens from exercising their rights, protest is a right. Gov Wike is infringing on the rights of the people of Rivers State.“
@TopeAkinyode, ”When policemen laid siege on Wike’s hotel at Benin we decried it because he enjoys executive immunity & can’t be arrested. Similarly, Wike can’t ban the #SARSMUSTEND protest in Port Harcourt. These are constitutional issues.”
@Ayodeletoyota, “Port Harcourt youths are higher version of Lagos youths. I don’t want to encourage them to protest peacefully and never make any attempt to fight the police.
What Wike said is unconstitutional and should be ignored. Protest; don’t molest.”
@Bolanldcole, “Dear Barrister Governor Wike!
You don’t have the power to stop a peaceful protest according to Section 40 CFRN 1999 as amended.Thank God you are a lawyer who graduated from law school.You cannot bully the people to submission.”
@tammyhalliday, ”Governor Wike should not disgrace his people or embarrass himself. We are coming to Government House to tell who we elected our problems & the reforms we want to see. It’s a Peaceful Protest to make sure #SARSMUSTEND and Port Harcourt people are ready.”
