The Presidential Committee on Prisons Reform and Decongestion has secured the release of a total of 64 inmates from prison facilities across Delta State.
The Presidential Committee of Prisons and Decongestion led by the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Hon. Justice I.U. Bello, after reviewing the case of inmates, released them on account of ill-health, old age and payment of fines.
Hon. Justice Bello, who was flanked by the Deputy Controller-General of Prisons, DCG, Abubakar Garuba and others, said the move was to decongest the prison across the state.
The breakdown of the inmates released from the various prisons across the state is as follows:
Warri Prison – 13
Sapele Prison – 15
Kwale Prison – 8
Agbor Prison – 18
Ogwashi-Uku Prison – 10
Total 64 inmates
Also present at the committee’s sitting in the prisons were the Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor Esq, the Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Marshal Umukoro (represented) and the Comptroller of Prisons, Delta State Command, CP Sam I. Iyakoregha.
The Controller of Prisons appreciated the Committee and the Delta State Government for the gesture, saying it would go a long way in decongesting the prisons in Delta State.
