Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has approved the composition of a Judicial Panel of Inquiry into alleged brutality of the Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state.
The panel, which comprises eleven members, is the result of directive from the National Economic Council following the nationwide protests against SARS.
According to a press statement signed by Humwashi Wonosikou, Press Secretary to Governor Fintiri, membership of the panel is drawn from the Judiciary, Civil Society Organizations, security, youth, religious and students groups.
The panel has as its terms of reference, among others, to receive and investigate complaints on police brutality or related extra-judicial killings.
The panel is also to determine whether or not there are individuals in custody and reason why they are kept in custody, to establish whether they have been arraigned in court as well as find out if some people died in custody.
The Panel has Justice Adamu Hobon (Rtd) as Chairman and Permanent Secretary Security as Secretary.
Other members of the Panel include AIG Ibrahim Baba Ahmed (Rtd), Barr Samuel Yaumande (Solicitor General), Representative of Ministry of Justice, His Lordship Bishop Japheth Tonmwaso, a representative of CAN; Alh Wakili Usman Ibrahim, representative of Muslim Council of Nigeria (MCN).
Other members are Grace Mamza, representing Human Rights Commission; James Kamale, President of SUG MAUTECH, Yola, for students; Amb. Ajeni Delo, representing youth organizations; Barr. Nafisatu Bala of Red Cross Society of Nigeria (RCSN), representing Civil Society
